Kochi to Alleppey in a Tempo Traveller: The Short Trip People Turn Into Two

76 km and about an hour on the map. For most groups one night is the whole trip. Here is the road, the ₹6,000 van rate, and the houseboat the van cannot drive onto.

Alleppey is the trip people overthink.

It is 76 km from our Aluva garage, and map routing puts the drive at about an hour. That is the shortest run we do out of Kochi, and it is still the one where groups ask whether they need two nights.

They do not. One night is the trip. Two nights is a decision about the houseboat, and I will come back to that.

The road

Out of Aluva and south on NH 66 — past Angamaly, then the long run down through Aroor, Cherthala and the Alappuzha district. It is a proper highway, four-lane for most of it, and quick in the way the map claims.

Two things slow it down, and neither shows up on a routing engine.

The first is Alappuzha town. NH 66 does not deliver you to the boat jetty; it skirts the town and you turn in. Once you are in, the streets narrow to two lanes with a canal running alongside, and a tempo traveller takes the room of two cars. The last three kilometres are the slowest of the entire trip.

The second is the Aroor stretch, if you leave Kochi after eight in the morning. That road is a commuter road before it is a tourist road.

Plan an hour and fifteen for a group. Not an hour.

What it costs

A 12 seater tempo traveller, the van most groups of ten to twelve take:

  • 1 Night / 2 Days — ₹6,000, 200 km included
  • 2 Nights / 3 Days — ₹9,000, 300 km included

Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra, so ₹1,400 across the two-day trip. Extra kilometres beyond the included distance are ₹23/km. Parking and tolls inside Kerala are free, and Alleppey is inside Kerala.

Now the part that matters on this particular route. Kilometres are billed garage to garage, so the return leg counts. Aluva to Alleppey and back is roughly 153 km. Against the 200 included km on a one-night trip, that leaves about 47 km of running around at the destination — enough for the beach, the pier and a lunch run. It is not enough to add Kumarakom and back on the same day.

Groups discover this on the way home, not on the way out.

The houseboat is not ours

People often assume the van rate includes the boat. It does not, and it cannot.

A houseboat is a different operator and a different booking entirely. What we do is get you to the jetty at the time you have booked, park, and wait while you are on the water. The crew stay with the vehicle. When you come back in the morning, your bags are where you left them and the drive home starts when you say so.

That is the arrangement, and it is worth knowing before you build a two-night plan around a boat you have not booked yet.

One night or two

One night works because there is not much driving. You arrive before lunch, you have the afternoon on the water and the evening at the beach or the pier, you sleep, and you drive back after breakfast. That is Alleppey.

Two nights earns its keep in one case only — a group that wants the houseboat night and a full day at Kumarakom, which sits on the same lake but a different road in. Kumarakom is the bird sanctuary and the quieter side of Vembanad. It deserves more than an hour.

When to come

The backwaters are at their best from October through February — cool, green, and the water high enough to make the canals worth travelling.

June to August is the monsoon, and this part of Kerala gets it hard. Boats still run. The roads flood in patches around Alappuzha town, and the drive that takes an hour and a quarter can take two. If your dates are fixed to the monsoon, build the slack in.

March and April get hot and humid. The boat is still pleasant; the town is not.

Common questions

How far is Alleppey from Kochi?
76 km from our Aluva garage. Routing calls it about an hour, but Alappuzha town narrows to two lanes in the last few kilometres, so plan an hour and a quarter with a group.
How many days do you need for Alleppey from Kochi?
One night covers the drive, the backwaters and the beach. A second night only makes sense if the houseboat, Kumarakom and the beach each want their own half-day.
What does a tempo traveller to Alleppey cost?
A 12 seater is ₹6,000 for 1 night / 2 days with 200 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra and extra km is ₹23. Toll and parking inside Kerala are included.
Can the tempo traveller drive onto the houseboat?
No. The houseboat is a separate operator and a separate booking from us. The van parks at the jetty and waits, and the crew look after it while you are on the water.
