Kochi to Kanyakumari in a Tempo Traveller: Five Days to the End of the Country

336 km each way to the southern tip of India. The coast road, the ₹15,000 five-day rate, the interstate permit, and how to pace a trip that ends at the sea.

Kanyakumari is where the road runs out. Land’s end — the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean meeting at a single point, and the last place south before there is nothing but water.

It is also 336 km from our garage, which makes it a five-day trip, not a weekend. Groups that treat it as one arrive, sleep, and drive straight back.

The road

The NH 66 coast road again, all the way down. Alappuzha, Kollam, Trivandrum, and then on past the city towards Nagercoil and the tip. It is highway for nearly all of it, and the long final stretch through Tamil Nadu is straight and quick.

The slow parts are the same as the Kovalam run — Kollam and Trivandrum — plus Nagercoil, which is a busy town close to the end of the drive.

Routing says 4 hours 31. With a group, stops and city traffic, plan five and a half hours.

The permit

Kanyakumari is in Tamil Nadu, so an interstate RTO permit applies and is charged in addition to the package rate. We arrange it.

What it costs

A 12 seater tempo traveller:

  • 4 Nights / 5 Days — ₹15,000, 500 km included
  • 5 Nights / 6 Days — ₹18,000, 600 km included

Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra, so ₹3,500 on the five-day trip. Extra km is ₹23, plus the permit.

The round trip is about 671 km, billed garage to garage. Against 500 included km that is around 171 km over — roughly ₹3,900 at ₹23. On a route this long, the kilometre allowance is not a footnote; it is a number worth settling before you travel.

Sunrise and sunset both

Kanyakumari is the rare place in India where you can watch the sun rise and set over the sea on the same day, because you are at the tip and the water is on three sides.

That is the thing to plan around. Sunrise at the tip is early and crowded; sunset is later and, in most people’s judgement, the better experience. Do both if you can, and give yourself the whole day between them.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue stand offshore and are reached by ferry — weather permitting, and the queue is real in season. Kumari Amman Temple is at the water’s edge, right where the three seas meet.

Pacing five days

The mistake here is trying to do everything on day one. The shape that works:

Day one is the drive down, arriving by evening. Day two is the town, the ferry and one of the sunrises. Day three is the full sunrise-and-sunset day, or a run out to Suchindram and Nagercoil. Day four begins the journey back, with a stop at Kovalam or Trivandrum if you want one. Day five is the final run into Kochi.

That fills a five-day booking without ever feeling rushed.

Telling the truth about the length

This is our longest coastal trip apart from Rameswaram, and it is worth being blunt: four nights is the minimum that makes sense. Anything shorter and you are paying for a van to sit on a highway.

If you only have a weekend, book Kovalam instead. If you have the days, Kanyakumari is worth them.

A few practical notes

The ferry to the Rock runs on the weather, and the morning queue builds fast. Go early or go mid-afternoon, not at the peak. The town itself is compact enough to walk in parts, but the sun is relentless — hats and water are not just for the beach days.

Nagercoil, ten minutes inland, is where the shops and the hospital are if anything goes wrong. Good to know, not to plan around.

When to come

November to February is the season — dry, warm and comfortable for the coast.

March and April are hot and humid.

June to August is the south-west monsoon, and this coast catches it fully.

Common questions

How far is Kanyakumari from Kochi?
336 km from our Aluva garage, about 4 hours 31 by routing. It is highway with Trivandrum and Nagercoil at the far end, so plan five and a half hours with a group.
How many days do you need for Kanyakumari?
Four nights. The drive alone is over ten hours for the round trip, so anything shorter means the trip is mostly road.
What does a tempo traveller to Kanyakumari cost?
A 12 seater is ₹15,000 for 4 nights / 5 days with 500 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra and extra km is ₹23. The interstate permit is charged separately.
Can we combine Kanyakumari with Kovalam?
Yes, they are on the same coast road and many groups do both in one run. It changes the number of nights, so tell us at the quoting stage rather than adding it mid-trip.
