Kochi to Kovalam in a Tempo Traveller: Four Hours South, Three Nights Minimum
246 km down the coast to Kerala's classic beach town. The drive, the ₹12,000 four-day rate, and why ayurveda guests should book the extra night.

Kovalam is the trip where the driving is a real part of the decision, and groups who ignore that end up disappointed.
246 km from Aluva. Over four hours in a van, with Trivandrum’s traffic at the far end. That is not an unreasonable drive — it is a long one — and it changes what the trip should look like.
Three nights is the honest minimum. Here is why, and what the four days cost.
The road
South on NH 66, the same coast highway that runs to Varkala, and on past it. Alappuzha, Kayamkulam, Kollam, then Trivandrum. The last hour is city traffic, and Kovalam sits about 15 km beyond the city on the Vizhinjam road.
Two slow points. Kollam, which is a city you drive through. And Trivandrum, which is the bigger one — the bypass helps, but if you arrive during the evening peak you will feel it.
Routing calls it 3 hours 26. Realistically, with a group, stops and Trivandrum, plan four hours.
What it costs
A 12 seater tempo traveller:
- 3 Nights / 4 Days — ₹12,000, 400 km included
- 4 Nights / 5 Days — ₹15,000, 500 km included
Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra, so ₹2,800 on the four-day trip. Extra km is ₹23. Parking and tolls inside Kerala are free, and Kovalam is inside Kerala.
The round trip is about 491 km, billed garage to garage. Against the 400 included km that is roughly 91 km over, or about ₹2,100 at ₹23. Four nights takes the allowance to 500 km and covers the run cleanly — worth doing if you were undecided between three nights and four.
Lighthouse, Hawa, and which is which
Lighthouse Beach is the main one — named for the lighthouse on the headland above it, with the resorts and restaurants behind. It is the busiest and the most built-up.
Hawa Beach, just north, is smaller and calmer. Samudra is the third, further north again and quieter.
The headland connects them, and there is a path over it. Walking between the beaches is easier than driving between them, which matters when your van is parked.
Ayurveda is the second reason people come
A good part of Kovalam’s trade is ayurveda — proper treatment courses, not a holiday massage. A course runs a week or more, and guests often come for exactly that.
If ayurveda is the plan, tell us upfront. It affects how many nights you want and where the van should be parked. A guest on a treatment schedule is not doing day trips, and the van may sit for days — which is fine, but the quote should reflect a plan rather than a guess.
An honest word
Kovalam is the most touristed beach in Kerala, and it shows. Prices on the beach road are international, the touts are persistent, and in peak season the main beach is crowded.
If your group wants a quiet coast, Varkala or Marari suit better. If you want the full beach-town infrastructure — resorts, restaurants, ayurveda, lots of people — Kovalam delivers exactly that.
Three nights, not two
Four hours each way is eight hours of driving for the round trip. On a two-night booking, that is a whole day of your trip spent in the van, leaving one clear day at the beach.
Three nights gives you two full days at the destination. That is the point at which a long drive stops being the main event.
A note on packing: Kovalam is humid year-round, and the beach road and the path between the beaches are uneven after rain. Comfortable sandals, not new ones. Most resorts sit a short walk from where the van can park, so plan to carry your bags rather than be driven to the door.
When to come
November to February is the season — dry, warm, comfortable.
March to May is hot and humid, good for ayurveda, hard for sightseeing.
June to August is the monsoon, and this coast takes it directly. Some resorts close. The sea is dangerous.

Common questions
- How far is Kovalam from Kochi?
- 246 km from our Aluva garage, roughly 3 hours 26 by routing. It is highway with Trivandrum city at the end, so plan a full four hours with a group.
- How many days do you need for Kovalam?
- Three nights. The drive is over four hours each way, so two nights means one full day at the beach out of four. Three gives you a proper break.
- What does a tempo traveller to Kovalam cost?
- A 12 seater is ₹12,000 for 3 nights / 4 days with 400 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra and extra km is ₹23. Toll and parking inside Kerala are included.
- Should we stop at Varkala on the way to Kovalam?
- You can, and it is on the same road, but it adds time and the two beaches are different trips. Better to pick one than to do half of each.
