Kochi to Rameswaram in a Tempo Traveller: Our Longest Run, and Why It Is a Five-Day Trip

465 km by road, across the Pamban bridge to the island temple. The honest kilometre maths, the ₹15,000 rate, and why this one cannot be rushed.

Rameswaram is the trip that sorts the groups who want to go from the groups who want to say they went.

It is 465 km from Aluva, our longest route by some distance, and it finishes on an island reached by a bridge over open sea. There is no version of this that is a short break. Here is what it actually takes.

The road

Out of Kochi and east across the state, via Madurai, then south-east towards the coast. The approach to Rameswaram runs through Ramanathapuram district, and then the road narrows to the causeway and crosses the Pamban bridge onto the island.

That crossing is the thing everyone remembers. The road bridge runs alongside the famous rail bridge, with the sea on both sides, and for about two kilometres there is nothing but water.

Routing puts it at 6 hours 54. With a group, a Madurai stop and the final approach, plan eight hours. That is one long day.

The permit

Rameswaram is in Tamil Nadu, so an interstate RTO permit applies and is charged in addition to the package rate. We arrange it.

The number nobody mentions until the end

This is the one route where I want you to see the arithmetic before you book, not after.

A 12 seater tempo traveller is:

  • 4 Nights / 5 Days — ₹15,000, 500 km included
  • 5 Nights / 6 Days — ₹18,000, 600 km included

Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra — ₹3,500 on the five-day trip. Extra km is ₹23, plus the permit.

Now the distance. Kilometres are billed garage to garage, so the return counts. Aluva to Rameswaram and back is roughly 930 km. Against the 500 km included on a five-day trip, that leaves about 430 km over — which is roughly ₹9,900 in extra kilometres on top of the package, the allowance and the permit.

I am spelling that out because it surprises people, and it should not. Rameswaram is far. A group that understands that number when they book is a group that enjoys the trip; a group that meets it on the final bill is a group that feels tricked. Tell us your plan and we will quote the whole thing properly.

What there is to do

Ramanathaswamy Temple is the reason for the pilgrimage — one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples, with the longest corridor of any temple in India and its own set of ritual bathing tanks. It needs a proper visit, not an hour.

Dhanushkodi, at the far eastern tip, is a ghost town left after a cyclone in 1964, reachable by a road that runs along a sandbar with sea on both sides. It is bleak and unforgettable.

Agni Theertham at the temple waterfront, and Pamban itself on the way back.

Why it cannot be rushed

Fifteen hours of driving for the round trip is the arithmetic that decides this. Even a five-day booking is really three days at the destination, and that is the minimum for the temple plus Dhanushkodi plus a rest.

Groups that try to do Rameswaram in three nights spend two of them recovering from the drive. Give it the days or pick a closer temple town.

The island is drier than you expect

Rameswaram is not green Kerala. It is an arid, windswept island of thorn scrub, salt pans and long straight roads, and the light turns harsh well before noon. Plan anything outdoors for the early hours and treat the middle of the day as rest. Most groups are surprised by how bare it looks, and by how strong the wind is on the exposed stretches.

There is also very little shade between the town and Dhanushkodi. Carry water.

When to come

November to February is the season — this is a hot, exposed island, and the cooler months make it pleasant.

March to June is punishing. There is little shade on the island roads.

October to December can bring cyclone weather on this coast, and the crossing is the first thing affected.

Common questions

How far is Rameswaram from Kochi?
465 km from our Aluva garage, about 6 hours 54 by routing. It is our longest route and it crosses the Pamban bridge onto an island, so plan eight hours with a group.
How many days do you need for Rameswaram?
At least four nights, realistically five days end to end. The drive is roughly 15 hours for the round trip before you have seen anything.
What does a tempo traveller to Rameswaram cost?
A 12 seater is ₹15,000 for 4 nights / 5 days with 500 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra and extra km is ₹23. The interstate permit is charged separately.
Can you drive a tempo traveller across the Pamban bridge?
Yes, the road bridge runs alongside the rail bridge onto Pamban island. It is the only way in, and the sea view from it is the moment the trip stops feeling like a highway.
