Kochi to Thekkady in a Tempo Traveller: Two Nights, and Why You Need Them
158 km to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. The road via Thodupuzha, the ₹9,000 two-night van rate, and why one night here does not work.

Thekkady is the trip where one night does not work, and it is worth understanding why before you book a van.
The distance is not the problem. 158 km from Aluva is a straightforward morning run. The problem is that everything worth doing at Thekkady happens at a time of day you cannot control — the boat safari fills its early slots and the spice trail wants a full afternoon. Squeeze both into a single overnight and you will do one of them badly.
Two nights. Here is what that buys you.
The road
North-east on the familiar Muvattupuzha road, then Thodupuzha, and from there the route climbs into the high ranges. The stretch beyond Thodupuzha runs through Nedumkandam and across the cardamom country to Kumily, which is the border town attached to Thekkady.
This is a proper ghat road in places. Not the continuous hairpins of the Munnar run, but a road that lifts and drops, with sections where two vehicles passing needs one of them to slow. Routing says 2 hours 7. With a group and stops, call it three hours.
What it costs
A 12 seater tempo traveller:
- 2 Nights / 3 Days — ₹9,000, 300 km included
- 3 Nights / 4 Days — ₹12,000, 400 km included
Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra, so ₹2,100 on the three-day trip. Extra km is ₹23. Parking and tolls inside Kerala are free, and Thekkady is inside Kerala.
The round trip is about 315 km, billed garage to garage — a shade over the 300 included km on the two-night trip. You are likely to finish with a small extra-km charge, and it is worth a word with us when we quote, so there is no surprise on the final bill. A group that wants to add a detour on the way home should say so upfront rather than discover the limit at the end.
The boat safari is the whole reason
Periyar Lake boat safari is what Thekkady exists for. The boats run fixed slots through the day, the early ones are the best for wildlife, and the good slots go early. Book online before you travel. Turning up on the morning and hoping is how groups end up on the least interesting boat of the day.
The sanctuary itself is a mix of forest and water where you might see elephant, bison, deer and, if you are lucky, a tiger — which most people are not, and any operator who promises you will is selling you something.
The spice trail
Kumily is cardamom and pepper country. The plantations around Thekkady run guided walks, and half a day among them is genuinely interesting if you have never seen how cardamom grows.
There is a border-town feel to Kumily as well — the shopping street in the evening, the Tamil-Kerala mix. It is a good place to be after a long day outside.
The one-night mistake
A group leaves Kochi at seven, arrives early evening, eats and sleeps. The next morning they have to check out and drive back. The boat, the spice trail and the town got compressed into a single afternoon, which usually means one of them was dropped.
Do the maths the other way and it is obvious: two nights give you a clean full day at the destination. That is the difference between having been to Thekkady and having seen it.
When to come
October to March is the season — cool mornings, the lake pleasant, the forest active.
September is green and quiet, and the roads are usually fine by then.
June to August is monsoon, and this is a leech-and-slippery-road kind of monsoon in the high ranges. Boat services can be suspended on the worst days.

Common questions
- How far is Thekkady from Kochi?
- 158 km from our Aluva garage, roughly 2 hours 7 by routing. It is a hill road for the second half, so plan close to three hours with a group.
- How many days do you need for Thekkady?
- Two nights. The boat safari needs an early slot, the spice plantations take a half-day, and Kumily town is worth an evening. One night means choosing one of those.
- What does a tempo traveller to Thekkady cost?
- A 12 seater is ₹9,000 for 2 nights / 3 days with 300 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra and extra km is ₹23. Toll and parking inside Kerala are included.
- Is one night in Thekkady enough?
- Not really. You arrive mid-afternoon and leave after breakfast, which leaves no space for an early Periyar boat slot plus the spice trail. Two nights is the honest minimum.
