Kochi to Vagamon in a Tempo Traveller: The Hill Trip Nobody Books First
95 km and a climb through Erattupetta gets you to Kerala's quietest hill station. The road, the ₹6,000 rate, and why this is the Munnar alternative.

Munnar is the name people say. Vagamon is where they end up happier.
That is not a pitch against Munnar — we run that trip constantly and it earns the reputation. But 95 km away, up a different road, there is a hill station with meadows instead of tea estates, pine forest instead of factory tours, and roughly none of the weekend crowd. If your plan was “a hill break from Kochi, one night”, read this before you default to the famous one.
The road
North-east out of Aluva, and this is a different journey from the Munnar run from the first kilometre.
You pick up the Muvattupuzha road, then turn for Thodupuzha, then Erattupetta. Up to Erattupetta it is a town road — busy, built-up, the kind of driving where a tempo traveller spends more time behind a lorry than any driver enjoys.
After Erattupetta the road changes character. It narrows, lifts, and starts to wind through rubber and then pine. This is the section that makes the trip. It also adds time the map will not show you.
Routing says 1 hour 33. With a group, a loaded van and the climb, plan two hours.
What it costs
A 12 seater tempo traveller:
- 1 Night / 2 Days — ₹6,000, 200 km included
- 2 Nights / 3 Days — ₹9,000, 300 km included
Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra. Extra km is ₹23. Tolls and parking inside Kerala are free.
Aluva to Vagamon and back is about 189 km, billed garage to garage. That sits inside the 200 km on a one-night trip with a handful of kilometres to spare — so the meadows, the pine forest and the tea gardens are all reachable without going over. This is one of the few hill routes where the standard package genuinely covers the whole trip, and it is a good reason to keep the plan simple.
What there is to do
The meadows. Grassy hills that look more like a Scottish postcard than a Kerala one. Walk them in the morning before the mist burns off.
The pine forest. A short stretch of tall pines with a road straight through it. Twenty minutes of photographs, ten minutes of walking.
Paragliding. Vagamon is one of the few places in Kerala where you can do it. It runs on weather, and the operators book on the day, so treat it as a bonus rather than a fixed item.
The tea gardens. Smaller than Munnar’s, still worth the drive through.
Why one night is enough
Here is the honest shape of it: the sights sit close together. Vagamon is not a town you explore, it is a landscape you stand in. A group that arrives by noon has the meadows and the pine forest done before dinner, sleeps somewhere cool, and has the morning free before the drive back.
Two nights only makes sense if you are paragliding and want a weather buffer, or if you want one day doing literally nothing.
Vagamon or Munnar?
Pick Munnar if you want Eravikulum National Park, the dam viewpoints, Top Station and the full tea-estate experience. It is the bigger, busier, more complete hill trip — 111 km and a heavier ghat section.
Pick Vagamon if you want quiet, a shorter drive, and a hill break that does not come with a queue. 95 km, one night, done.
A group that books Vagamon expecting Munnar will be disappointed. A group that books it expecting nothing but hills, cool air and no crowd will have a very good weekend.
When to come
October to February is the window — clear mornings, cold nights, the meadows at their greenest.
June to August brings the monsoon and serious mist. The meadows disappear into cloud and the road after Erattupetta gets slick. Not dangerous in the way the Munnar ghats are, but you may see nothing.
March to May is warm and hazy, and the hills look tired.

Common questions
- How far is Vagamon from Kochi?
- 95 km from our Aluva garage, about 1 hour 33 by routing. The climb after Erattupetta takes longer with a loaded van, so plan around two hours.
- Is Vagamon a good alternative to Munnar?
- For a short quiet break, yes. Munnar is 111 km with the tea estates and Eravikulam; Vagamon is 95 km with meadows, pine forest and far fewer people. If you want the big Munnar set pieces, go to Munnar.
- What does a tempo traveller to Vagamon cost?
- A 12 seater is ₹6,000 for 1 night / 2 days with 200 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra and extra km is ₹23. Toll and parking inside Kerala are included.
- Do you need two nights for Vagamon?
- One is enough. The distance is short and the sights are close together, so a single night gives you a full afternoon and a full morning without rushing.
