Travelling Around Onam: Booking a Van in Kerala's Busiest Week
Onam moves with the Malayalam calendar and fills the roads. When it falls, why every good vehicle goes early, and how to plan a group trip through it.

Onam is the one week of the year when Kerala’s roads fill with Keralites, not tourists.
That distinction matters. Onam is a family festival — people travel home, and they travel across the state on the same four days. The roads that are quiet in November are the roads that crawl on Thiruvonam, and every vehicle in the state is booked.
If you are planning a group trip through that week, plan around it rather than into it.
When it falls
Onam follows the Malayalam month of Chingam, which lands in August or early September, and the main day — Thiruvonam — moves each year with the calendar.
It is not a fixed date the way Christmas is. Before you build anything around Onam, check the actual date for your year. The festival spans several days, with the holiday period around it, and the school holidays overlap it, which is what makes the roads what they are.
Why transport is the hard part
In most weeks, booking a tempo traveller is a matter of a few days’ notice and picking the vehicle you want.
In Onam week it is neither. Demand comes from three directions at once:
- Families going home, moving across the state in groups.
- School holidays, so the hill stations and beaches fill.
- Events — and the biggest of them is the Nehru Trophy boat race on Punnamada Lake at Alleppey, held in August, which fills every road and room in Alappuzha district for days around it.
The result is that the vehicle you want is gone, and the one that is left is not the one you wanted. Book weeks ahead, not days, and be ready to accept a slightly different van.
Planning the trip
Expect the roads to take longer. A four-hour Munnar run can become six, and not because of weather — because of the sheer volume heading the same way on the same day. Build the slack in.
Avoid Alleppey on boat-race day unless the race is why you are going. Punnamada and the roads around Alappuzha become a single slow queue. If you want the backwaters and not the crowd, pick another day in the same week.
Book the houseboat separately and early. The boats fill before the vans do, and the van booking does not include one.
Consider the quieter towns. Vagamon at 95 km and Thekkady at 158 km take you to hills without the Munnar crowd, and both are pleasant in the weeks around Onam.
What it costs
The rate does not change for Onam:
- 12 seater — ₹3,000 per day, 100 km included per day
- 17 seater — ₹3,300 per day
Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra. Tolls and parking inside Kerala are free.
The risk in Onam week is not the price. It is finding a vehicle at all if you have left it late, and that is the one thing patience does not fix.
The ten days, not one
Onam is not a single day. It runs from Atham to Thiruvonam across ten days, with the heaviest crowds on the last two or three. If your dates are flexible, travelling in the first half of that period gives you the same festival atmosphere with noticeably lighter roads.
Where to go instead
If the point of the trip is a hill break rather than the festival itself, the week after Thiruvonam is the sweet spot. The holidays are ending, families are heading home, and the hill stations empty out while the weather is still clear. Vagamon at 95 km and Thekkady at 158 km both take you to the hills without joining the Munnar queue, and both are comfortable as a single overnight.
The simple version
Book early. Leave early in the day. Skip Alleppey on race day. Choose the hills over the coast if you want space.
That is the whole of it. Onam is predictable — the dates are known years ahead, the crowds are certain, and you have weeks to plan. Almost everything that goes wrong that week goes wrong because someone booked three days out.
