Tempo Traveller in Ernakulam: City Pickups, the Junction and Vytilla

Ernakulam is a different pickup problem from Aluva — traffic, station crowds and two separate hubs. Where to meet the van, and what it costs.

Ernakulam — a pick-up problem of traffic and two hubs, not distance.

Ernakulam is the opposite problem to Aluva. Aluva is a starting line on a highway. Ernakulam is a city you have to get out of first.

That is not a reason to avoid a pickup here — a lot of our groups are based in the city — but it does change how the trip should be planned.

Two hubs, and they are not the same

We operate out of two points in the city, and which one suits you depends on how you are arriving.

Ernakulam Junction — the main railway station, known locally as Ernakulam South. Pick this if part of your group is coming by train, or if you are staying in the centre of the city.

Vytilla Mobility Hub — the big bus terminal south-east of the centre, where long-distance and interstate buses arrive. Pick this if your group is coming in by bus, or if you are staying in the southern part of the city.

Both are easier for a tempo traveller than a hotel handover in the middle of town, because both have somewhere to stand a large vehicle. Central Ernakulam does not. There is effectively no large-vehicle parking around MG Road, and asking a 12 seater to idle on a narrow city street while twelve people load is how a pickup turns into a traffic incident.

Timing is the whole game

Getting out of Ernakulam in the morning is the slowest part of any city trip.

Between 8 am and 10 am, allow forty minutes to an hour to clear the city towards NH 66 south or NH 85 east. Leave at six, and it takes fifteen minutes.

For a Kochi to Alleppey run at 76 km, that difference is the whole margin on your day. A group that leaves the city at nine is still on the outskirts at ten and arrives in Alappuzha close to noon. The same group leaving at six is on the water by ten.

This is the single most useful piece of advice on this page: if your trip starts from Ernakulam, leave early.

What it costs

Local hire is a fixed 8 hour / 80 km day package per vehicle:

  • 12 seater — ₹3,000
  • 17 seater — ₹3,300

Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra. Tolls and parking inside Kerala are free.

For a longer trip, it becomes a package rate. Note again that kilometres count from the garage and back, so a trip that starts in the city rather than at Aluva uses more of its allowance before it reaches the highway. That is not a penalty, it is just how the distance works — and it is why we will often suggest starting from Aluva if your group can meet there.

Staying in Fort Kochi or on the islands?

If your hotel is in Fort Kochi, Mattancherry or on the islands, a city pickup is the wrong end. The north end of the city is a shorter run to the ferry side, and traffic in and out of the peninsula is its own problem.

Tell us where you are staying, and we will pick the handover point that costs you the least time — Aluva, Cochin Airport, Ernakulam Jn or Vytilla, whichever is genuinely closest to you.

The airport question

If your group is flying in and staying in Ernakulam, do not route the airport pickup through the city centre first. Cochin Airport to Ernakulam is about 28 km, and a van doing that run in the evening peak will take over an hour.

Where the group is going matters more than where it is staying — tell us both and we will choose the handover point that actually saves time. Fort Kochi and the islands are worse still: the peninsula has one narrow approach, and a tempo traveller on it moves slower than the ferry.

One last thing. For a large group, Vytilla is easier than the Junction. More space. Fewer crowds. Simpler turns for a big vehicle.

Common questions

Where do you pick up in Ernakulam?
Most commonly at Ernakulam Junction railway station or the Vytilla Mobility Hub. Both are our operating points in the city, and we confirm the exact spot when you book.
Is pickup from Ernakulam more expensive than from Aluva?
No, the rate is the same. The difference is time — leaving Ernakulam means crossing the city before you reach a highway, and that delay is real in the morning.
Can a tempo traveller park in central Ernakulam?
Only briefly at a designated point. Central Ernakulam has almost no large-vehicle parking, which is why station and Vytilla pickups work better than an MG Road handover.
How long does it take to get out of Ernakulam in the morning?
Allow forty minutes to an hour to clear the city towards NH 66 or NH 85 between 8 am and 10 am. Leaving at 6 am takes fifteen.
