Tempo Traveller One Way or Round Trip? Why There Is No True One Way

People ask us for a one-way drop to Trivandrum every week. Kilometres are counted garage to garage, so the van comes home either way. Here is what that means for your quote.

People ask us for a one-way quote to Trivandrum most weeks. The honest answer is that there is no true one-way tempo traveller trip — not the way the pricing works.

Here is why, and what to book instead.

The garage rule

Every van we run has a home. Aluva, Cochin Airport, Vytilla and Kaloor on the Kochi side. Trivandrum Airport and Trivandrum Central at the other end.

Kilometres are counted from the garage and back to the same garage. So the van leaves Aluva, does your trip, and returns to Aluva. That return leg is on the meter whether you are sitting in the van or not.

For an operator that is not a trick. It is how the vehicle stays in service and stays priced. For you, it means a one-way drop to Kovalam — 246 km — is quoted with the empty run home already in mind.

So what does one way actually cost?

More than half the round trip, usually. Not because we pad it, but because the van drives the distance either way.

If you want the number straight, a one-way drop with no return passenger is best treated as a round trip on mileage. The Executive Tempo 12 is ₹3,000 a day at ₹23 per extra km. Kovalam is 246 km one way, and three nights by our reckoning.

When one way makes sense

There is one case. When both ends are ours.

We hand over at Aluva, you travel south, and we collect at Trivandrum Airport or Trivandrum Central rather than dragging the van back north empty. That is not a magic discount — the return journey still exists somewhere in the maths — but it can be worked out between our two garages, and it is worth asking.

Ask before you assume. Most people never do, and then think the quote is wrong.

The round trip, in practice

For almost everyone, round trip is simply the trip.

It suits the way people actually travel. You leave Kochi, spend a night or three at the destination, and come back. The van and driver stay with you throughout, which is what you are paying for — a vehicle on a rental basis that you can use as your own for the whole package.

A three-night Kovalam trip is four days at the daily rate. For a Winger at ₹2,600 that is ₹10,400 with 400 km included. Driver allowance is ₹700 a day extra, so ₹2,800 across four days. Tolls and parking inside Kerala are free.

The case against the round trip

Be honest about the downside. If your plan is a straight drop with no sightseeing at either end, a dedicated van for the whole trip is expensive. A car arranged as a simple point-to-point transfer is cheaper for that job — airport to city, or Kochi to a hotel and out again.

We will say that. We are a tempo traveller business, but a tempo traveller is the wrong tool for a four-person straight transfer, and you should hear it from us.

What to check before booking

Where the handover is, at both ends. That single question decides your kilometrage.

How many nights. Package days equal nights plus one, so one night is two days of rate and two days of included kilometres.

Whether the trip crosses into Tamil Nadu. Kodaikanal, Madurai, Kanyakumari and Rameswaram do, so an interstate RTO permit applies and is charged separately.

The permit, and why it belongs in this discussion

Here is where one way and round trip blur again.

A round trip south to Kovalam — 246 km, three nights — never leaves Kerala, so no interstate permit applies. Go instead to Madurai, 277 km and three nights, and it does, because Madurai is across the line in Tamil Nadu. Same shape of trip, different paperwork, extra line on the quote.

If a one-way drop would take the van across the state line and leave it there, the permit and the empty return both land in the same place. That is worth knowing before you compare a one-way quote from one operator to a round trip from another.

Why bigger groups tilt to one van

The round trip maths gets stronger as the group grows.

Nineteen people in one Executive Tempo 19 at ₹4,600 a day is a single vehicle, a single driver allowance of ₹700, and nobody coordinating a convoy. Nineteen people split across cars south of Kollam is a different day entirely.

Booking

Send us your start point, end point and number of nights and we will quote it as the trip it really is — with the empty running shown honestly rather than buried.

Rates are indicative and change during peak festive days. Kilometres are counted garage to garage, with driver allowance and any interstate permit on separate lines in your final quote.

Common questions

Do you charge one way or round trip for a tempo traveller?
Kilometres are counted garage to garage, so a drop to Kovalam or Kanyakumari is priced with the van's return in mind. Where both ends are our own garages, a one-way handover can be arranged and quoted specifically.
Is a one-way drop cheaper than a round trip?
Usually not by much, because the van returns either way. It is worth asking only when your drop is at one of our garages — Trivandrum Airport or Trivandrum Central at the southern end.
How many days is a round trip to Kovalam?
Kovalam is 246 km from Aluva, three nights by our reckoning. That is four days of package rate with 400 km included on a 12 seater.
What is included in a round trip quote?
100 km per day, with driver allowance of ₹700 per day extra. Tolls and parking inside Kerala are free. Tamil Nadu trips carry a separate interstate permit.
