Tempo Traveller for Sabarimala and Guruvayur: What a Pilgrim Group Actually Needs

The Sabarimala trip is a fixed-duration package, not a taxi fare. How it works for 9 to 26 pilgrims, and how Guruvayur fits into the same trip.

A pilgrimage group moves on the group's schedule, not the driver's.

Pilgrimage travel is different from holiday travel, and the difference is not the destination. It is that the group’s timing is set by the temple and the trek, not by the driver, and it is fixed in ways a holiday never is.

That is why the Sabarimala trip is quoted as a package of hours, not a taxi fare. Here is how it actually works.

The Sabarimala package is fixed-duration

We quote Sabarimala as either a 26-hour or a 32-hour round trip from Kochi, priced per vehicle. It is not a per-kilometre fare, and it is not a trip you can extend by an hour on the way back.

That structure exists because a Sabarimala run is not a drive to a place and back. It is a drive, a park, a trek, a darshan, a return to the vehicle and a drive home — and the middle part takes as long as it takes.

26 hours suits a group that is moving briskly and has its darshan slot arranged. 32 hours is the safer choice for a larger group, for anyone with elderly pilgrims, or during the peak season when the queues are real.

Tell us which you want, and be honest about your group’s pace. Choosing 26 hours and needing 32 is the one mistake that cannot be fixed on the day.

Size the group properly

Our vans seat 9 to 26 pilgrims, so a single vehicle covers most family and friends’ groups.

  • A 12 seater suits a family group of eight to ten with their bags.
  • A 17 seater is the usual pick for a friends’ group of twelve to fifteen.
  • A 19 or 26 seater is for a large group travelling together — and the 26 seater in particular means one vehicle, one driver and one set of parking arrangements instead of two.

Pilgrim groups carry less luggage than holiday groups, but they carry it for a shorter, more intense trip. Someone will bring more than they need. The 26 seater absorbs that without complaint.

Guruvayur in the same trip

Guruvayur is north of Kochi, and Sabarimala is to the south-east, in the hills. They are not on the same road, which means the order of the two matters.

The common shape is Guruvayur first, then Sabarimala, because Guruvayur is the shorter, easier stop and Sabarimala is the one with the trek and the timing pressure. Doing it the other way round means arriving at Guruvayur tired, after the hill roads.

Tell us your plan and we will sequence it. This is exactly the kind of thing an operator should sort out before you travel rather than leave you to discover at 4 am.

Practical notes for the group

Parking at Pamba is managed and can be some distance from the trek start, particularly in season. The driver handles it and will tell you where to meet the vehicle when you come back down. Know that number before you separate.

Keep the driver’s phone number with every family in the group, not just with the organiser. Groups fragment on the way up and back.

Dress and preparation are temple rules, not transport rules, but they affect timing — the queue at the footwear counter is a real delay.

Food is best arranged by the group. We can stop where you want and when you want, but we do not choose the restaurant.

What it costs

Sabarimala is quoted as the 26-hour or 32-hour package rate per vehicle, so the vehicle you choose is the main variable. A local day for Guruvayur, if you are doing it as a separate trip, is billed as an 8 hour / 80 km day package.

Driver allowance is ₹700 per day extra for the tempo travellers. Tolls and parking inside Kerala are free.

For a group of seventeen, the 17 seater at its package rate usually works out cheaper per pilgrim than two smaller vehicles, and it keeps the group together for the whole pilgrimage — which for many families is the point.

Common questions

What is the Sabarimala tempo traveller package?
A fixed-duration group package of either 26 hours or 32 hours for the round trip from Kochi to Sabarimala and back, quoted per vehicle rather than by kilometre.
How many pilgrims can travel in one tempo traveller to Sabarimala?
Our vans seat 9 to 26 pilgrims. A single 17 seater covers most family and friends' groups, and a 26 seater handles a large group in one vehicle.
Can we combine Sabarimala and Guruvayur in one trip?
Yes, and many groups do. Guruvayur sits north of Kochi while Sabarimala is to the south-east, so the order matters — tell us your plan and we will sequence the two properly.
Is parking available at Sabarimala for a tempo traveller?
Parking at Pamba is managed and can be a distance from the trek start, especially in season. Your driver will handle it and tell you where to meet the vehicle on the way back.
