Tempo Traveller vs Innova Crysta: We Don't Sell Crystas, So Take This Seriously

A Crysta seats six passengers. A tempo traveller starts at nine. An operator who runs only vans explains which one your group should actually book — and where the car wins.

Two ways to move a family around Kerala, parked at the same tea stop.

We took a call last month from six people going to Thekkady. They wanted a tempo traveller. We told them not to book one.

Let me be straight about our position, because it matters for the rest of this. We run tempo travellers and Urbanias. We do not sell Toyota Innova Crystas. So when we tell you a Crysta is the better call, you know it is not a sales line.

Mostly, the answer comes down to one number. How many of you are there?

The capacity gap is the whole thing

A Crysta seats seven, driver included. That is six passengers, or five if everyone wants elbow room.

A tempo traveller in our fleet starts at nine and runs to twenty-six. The Winger AC seats nine or twelve at ₹2,600 a day. The Executive Tempo 12 is ₹3,000 a day.

Twelve people in one tempo traveller is one vehicle. Twelve people in Crystas is two cars, two drivers, two fuel bills, and a convoy that splits at the first junction and stays split.

When the Crysta wins

Four or fewer. No hedging.

A Crysta fits the Fort Kochi lanes and a beach parking spot where a tempo traveller is a nuisance. It sips diesel where a van drinks it. On a short run — Alleppey at 76 km, an easy hour — the smaller car is simply the right size.

Five or six with light bags? A Crysta still works. It stops working the moment the bags are hard-shell and the seventh person confirms.

When the tempo traveller wins

Seven and up, and every time the trip runs long.

A tempo traveller gives each of twelve people their own seat plus a luggage hold behind the rear bench. On the Munnar run — 111 km, mostly ghat after Adimali — nobody sits on a lap or grips a suitcase. On the long crawl to Thekkady, 158 km, the difference between a van and a squeezed car is the difference between arriving fresh and arriving stiff.

Then the cost maths flips once you pass eight people. One Winger at ₹2,600 a day beats two Crystas on hire cost, and it is one driver allowance of ₹700, not two.

Two cars or one van

Take twelve people and work it out. Two Crystas means two drivers, two fuel bills, and a fresh decision every time the group splits for lunch or a photo stop.

One Executive Tempo 12 at ₹3,000 a day plus a single ₹700 driver allowance is one line on the invoice and one vehicle to hold together. On the long, empty stretch of NH 66 heading south toward Kollam, two cars lose each other at every fuel stop. A group that travels as a convoy does not travel as a group.

Luggage settles it too. A Crysta’s third row folds up to make boot space — useful, until the seventh passenger arrives and there is nowhere to sit. A tempo traveller keeps every seat and still has a hold behind the rear bench.

The difficulty nobody mentions

A Crysta is quicker. Plainly quicker. Lighter, easier in traffic, and better able to overtake on the two-lane sections past Angamaly. A loaded tempo traveller takes its time and should.

That is not a fault. It is the trade you make for twelve seats and a luggage hold. Just do not expect a van to move like a car on the ghats.

The bit people forget

Height and floor.

The Crysta sits low; the tempo traveller sits higher. If you are travelling with elderly parents or anyone with a bad knee, that high step into a van is a real barrier, and the Crysta is easier. Say so when you book and we will factor it in.

The other thing is footprint. A tempo traveller needs more road. It takes the Adimali hairpins fine — it does that route constantly — but it is a bigger vehicle, and narrow village lanes are not its home.

A word against oversizing

Do not book a tempo traveller for six people just in case. You will pay ₹2,600 or ₹3,000 a day plus a ₹700 driver allowance for a van that sits two-thirds empty. Take the car. We would rather you did, and come back to us when the group grows.

The reverse holds too. Do not squeeze thirteen people into two Crystas to save a little. That is two driver allowances, a split group, and somebody on a lap for four hours to Munnar. One van is the cheaper and the kinder answer.

Booking

Tell us the headcount first, then the route. If a car is the right answer, we will tell you. If a nine or twelve seater tempo is the honest fit, we will match you to it.

Common questions

Should I hire a tempo traveller or an Innova Crysta?
Count the group. Up to six passengers with light bags, a Crysta is the better fit. Seven and up, or any long trip, a tempo traveller gives everyone a proper seat — the Winger at ₹2,600 a day or the Executive Tempo 12 at ₹3,000.
How many people fit in a tempo traveller compared to a Crysta?
A Crysta carries six passengers plus the driver. A tempo traveller in our fleet starts at nine seats and goes to twenty-six, so one van replaces two or three cars.
Is a tempo traveller cheaper than two Innovas for twelve people?
For twelve people, one 12 seater at ₹3,000 a day plus ₹700 driver allowance costs less than two cars with two drivers and two fuel bills, and there is no convoy to keep together.
Can a tempo traveller and a Crysta both reach Munnar?
Both reach Munnar, 111 km from our Aluva garage, and both handle the ghat section after Adimali. The difference is space and cost, not the road.
